Matryoshikaという曲がお薦め。

Ubykからのメッセージによると:

"We love Radiohead, though our sound is different (which is good cause no-one can/should sound like Radiohead) and at this point maybe a little simpler... but we do share a similar aesthetic in that we write pop songs that have a little twist and believe in experimentation and interesting arrangements"

ということで、Radioheadから影響を受けているようだ。違うと言えば違うが良い意味で、特に実験的な感じがするところが似ていると思う。

Radiohead好きは、一度聴いてみる価値はあるだろう。

個人的にはRadioheadよりも聴きやすい。

Indie Review - Tinariwen

今日紹介するTinariwenというバンドはかなりレアだ。

なんとマリ共和国のブルースバンド(?)だ。

マリ共和国は広辞苑によると次の通りだ：

「アフリカ北西部の共和国。旧仏領スーダンの内陸国。1960年独立。面積124万平方キロメートル。人口1079万(1995)。首都バマコ。」

MySpaceにはメンバーと彼らの生い立ちについて次のようにある:

It's often said that every Touareg in the southern Sahara is a member of Tinariwen, such is the reach and importance of the band in their home territory.

It’s true that dozens of different people have played, danced and sung with the band during their long history.

Various crucial participants in the Tinariwen story are now for various reasons no longer permanent fixtures in the band.

These include founder member Inteyeden, who died of a mysterious illness in 1994, legendary rebel and fearless desert groover Kheddou, who along with rhythm-guitarist extraordinaire Djarra have now formed a new band called Terakaft (‘The Caravan’), singer Wounou Wallet Oumar, sister of Mina, who died of a kidney infection in 2005 and bassist Sweiloum, who is taking vacation from music.

興味深いのは最後のパラグラフだ。

どうやら創立メンバーが謎の死を遂げているらしい。


さらにプロフィールには次のようにある：


The Tinariwen story is already well marinated in startling myths; fierce nomadic desert tribesmen toting guns and guitars, Ghadaffi’s poet-soldiers spreading their gospel of freedom throughout the world, turbaned rock’n’roll troubadours, Stratocaster on one shoulder, Kalashnikov on the other, 17 bullet wounds and rawest desert blues on earth.

現地では伝説的なバンドなのかもしれない。

やはり、戦争や紛争で揉めている地域では、ロックが生き生きしているように思える。

現在の先進国ロックがぱっとしないのは昔より平和になったからなのかも。

視聴を聴く限り、民族音楽とロックの融合という感じだ。

インドや他のエスニックな国とはまた違う味があると思う。

Indie Review - Desperado

今日はルーマニアのトランシルヴァニアで活動しているカントリーロックバンドであるDesperadoを紹介する。

MySpaceの一言の欄には次のようにある：

Country Rock Made In Transylvania


カントリーロックと言えばアメリカが浮かぶが、彼らが言うのはトランシルヴァニア産のカントリーロックということか。

視聴を聴いても、何か新しく新鮮なカントリーミュージックが聴ける。

メンバーは5人で次の通り(写真では6人居るような)：

Sandy "The Gun" Deac - lead vocal, acoustic guitar
Laci "Indiana Jones" Kovacs - guitar
Vlad "P.G. Suckermann" Spatar - bass, backing vocal
Ovidiu "Zozo McHorny" Horneac - keyboards, backing vocal

Oviduが二人居るのは血縁関係か何かか(?)

カントリーロックファンとくに要チェックだ。

Indie Review - Pogodno

今日はポーランド共和国のオルタナバンドのPogodnoを紹介する。

写真を見ても分かる通り、不思議な雰囲気を持つバンドだ。

メンバーは4人で次の通り：

Jarek Kozlowski - drums, vocal
Marcin Macuk - rhodes, vocoder, vocal
Michael Pfeiff - bass guitar, vocal
Jacek Szymkiewicz - guitar, vocal

全員で歌えるらしい。

視聴を聴いてみると、Beckのように楽曲の中に遊び心が見られる。

ポーランド語で歌っているので何を言っているのか見当もつかないのだが、ポーランド語独特のイントネーションや響きが心地よい。

さらに、MySpaceのプロフィールの欄には次のようにある:

In the last 4 years we have recieved nominations for the Fryderyk Awards (The Polish Music Industry Awards) as the 'best alternative music band'.

どうやら、ポーランド版グラミー賞のようなのを受賞したようで、ポーランドでは結構メジャーなのかもしれない。

ポーランドに行ったら聴いてみたいバンドだ。

Indie Review - The Quarter After

今日はサイケデリックロックバンドのThe Quarter Afterを紹介したい。

アメリカのロサンゼルスで活動しているバンドである。

どうやら、メンバーの中にはThe Brian Jonestown Massacre(以後BJM)の元メンバーであるロブカンパネラが居るようだ。

新しいバンドなのだが、古い曲に聴こえてくるのが不思議である。

逆に古い曲の乗りなのに新しい曲にも聴こえてくるのである。

どうやら、BJMの他にもSpacemen 3、The Birds、The Warlocks, Jesus and Mary Chainなどからも影響を受けているようだ。

今後の活躍に期待だ。

Indie Review - Spindrift

今日はアメリカのサイケデリックバンドのSpindriftを紹介したい。

バンド名を直訳すれば「砂煙」、アメリカ西部の西部劇を感じさせる。

実際にバンドのサウンドタイプ的にはサイケデリック+カントリーのようだ。

それはMySpaceの影響を受けた音楽の欄を見ても分かる:

Carnival Music, Vampire Soundtracks (Anthony DiLorenzo), Norwegian Classical Folk Music (Grieg, Tviett, etc...), Swamp Blues (Lonesome Sundown), Spaghetti Westerns (Morricone, Nicolai, Johnny Western), The Doors, Mexican Classical (Manuel De Falla & Sylvestre Revueltas, early Marimba Music, Moorish Gypsy Music, Flamenco), Rennaisance Music, Outer Space, L.S.D., Henzig and ICE-T O.G.

中にはNorwegian Classical Folk MusicやMexican Classicalという珍しいジャンルも挙げられている。

また、プロフィールの一節には次のようなことが書かれている：

We have a song for the lone star that shines across this desert wasteland...

どうやらウェスタンな印象を感じられたのは間違いじゃないらしい。

ロック+サイケ+西部劇というコンセプトが何とも面白いと思う。
